The “Sharing Water in the Klamath Basin” is an Elementary Townhall simulation” designed to introduce younger learners to the fundamentals of civic participation and environmental stewardship. In this unique adaptation, students take on the perspectives of various species living within the Klamath River Basin—such as fish, birds, and other wildlife—to advocate for their survival in a watershed where water is a scarce resource. By researching their assigned stakeholder and delivering persuasive testimony to a panel of “human decision-makers” from the Oregon Water Resources Department, students build empathy and recognize the complexity of real-world ecological issues. This active learning resource emphasizes civil discourse, collaborative problem-solving, and perspective-taking, helping students develop the skills necessary to propose thoughtful solutions for regional water allocation challenges.
