Townhall Simulation: Drug Addiction
The «Drug Addiction» is a Townhall simulation designed to engage students in the complexities of public policy and community problem-solving. Set against the backdrop of Oregon’s evolving drug laws, the simulation tasks students with researching and representing diverse stakeholders—such as medical professionals, law enforcement, business owners, and individuals in recovery—to provide testimony on how their community should respond to drug addiction. The curriculum guides learners through a structured process of studying background issues, conducting inquiry-based research for evidence, and practicing persuasive oral delivery. By navigating a scenario where county commissioners seek public input on «deflection» programs and treatment strategies, students develop critical skills in consensus-building, perspective-taking, and deliberative democracy
