Civics Learning Project is pleased to announce that<\/span> The Civics Education Act <\/span><\/i>(HB2299\/SB513), a bill ensuring that every Oregon high school student will receive one semester of civics education, has passed in both the Oregon Senate and House. It is now headed to Gov. Brown’s desk for signature.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

This bill has sparked a statewide conversation about civics education, resulting in coverage in a number of press outlets, collected on this page<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Civics education is essential to a democratic society. Recent events clearly demonstrate that we need to reaffirm and reinforce our commitment to empowering students with the tools that will sustain our democracy and their future.\u00a0<\/span>Oregon is one of only 11 states that do not require a civics education class for graduation<\/i><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>We must do a better job of preparing our youth with the knowledge of the rights and responsibilities we each share to participate in our communities and make positive changes in the world around us.<\/span><\/p>\n

We extend a deep thank you to the hundreds of educators, public leaders, organizations, businesses, and individuals who signed the letters of support for this bill. Many legislators indicated that the outpouring of public support helped them make their final decision to vote YES.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Civics Education is Essential<\/b><\/h4>\n

Civics education builds a foundation for a common\u00a0understanding – across the political spectrum – that is the foundation of a healthy democracy. Unfortunately, too\u00a0many of our students are graduating without a solid grasp of how our democracy works\u00a0and the fundamentals of our civic society.\u00a0<\/span>The Civics Education Act\u00a0is a powerful solution to this problem<\/i><\/b>.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

The Civics Education Act<\/span><\/i>\u00a0is simple.\u00a0It provides that every high school student will receive\u00a0one semester of\u00a0civics education prior to graduation.\u00a0<\/span>The\u00a0Civics Education Act<\/span><\/i>\u00a0does not increase the number of credits that\u00a0students need\u00a0to graduate.\u00a0It simply ensures that one\u00a0semester out of the three years of social\u00a0studies currently required by the\u00a0Department of Education will be focused on teaching civics.\u00a0Strong civic education standards already\u00a0exist, and the requirement will apply to high school\u00a0diplomas awarded on or\u00a0after January 1, 2026, giving schools time to incorporate a civics course into the\u00a0curriculum for all high school students.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This recent\u00a0<\/span>article<\/span><\/a>, featuring the class of long-time CLP teacher Gail Greaney in Sisters, highlights the lasting impact civics education has on students.\u00a0<\/span>All our students deserve the opportunity to benefit from civics education<\/i><\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

How You Can Help<\/b><\/h4>\n

The Civics Education Act<\/span><\/i>\u00a0has been\u00a0introduced in the House and the Senate and will have its first hearing in the Senate Education Committee on March 10.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
