{"id":17091,"date":"2018-03-08T11:01:00","date_gmt":"2018-03-08T18:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.classroomlaw.org\/?p=17091"},"modified":"2018-08-02T17:41:51","modified_gmt":"2018-08-02T17:41:51","slug":"marilyn-cover-announces-her-retirement-from-classroom-law-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/civicslearning.org\/es\/marilyn-cover-announces-her-retirement-from-classroom-law-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Marilyn Cover Announces Her Retirement from Civics Learning Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.classroomlaw.org\/files\/\/MC_Street-Law.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-17117\" src=\"http:\/\/www.classroomlaw.org\/files\/\/MC_Street-Law.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"376\" \/><\/a>After 40 years as a champion and pioneer of civic education \u2013 35 of them as the founding Executive Director of Civics Learning Project \u2013 Marilyn Cover has announced her retirement effective October 2018. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<strong>This is a bittersweet moment for us,\u201d said Peter Koehler, Chair of the CLP Board of Directors. \u201cMarilyn has surely earned the right to retire after all these years \u2013 and she leaves us with an organization focused on civics education and citizenship that is best in class \u2013 but her shoes will certainly be hard to fill.\u201d <\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marilyn has been tireless in her pursuit of strengthening community and democracy. She has forged local, regional, national, and international partnerships, fostering the collaboration needed to make CLP the premier organization of its kind. She has engaged multiple constituencies \u2013 K12 education, the legal community, academia, businesses, and civic leaders \u2013 with a keen understanding of how their talents and interests can come together for the common good of building future generations of active community members.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working with those next generations resonates strongly with Marilyn as she looks back on her work. \u201cI&#8217;m so happy to have made a career helping students understand the Constitution and the power of their voice and I\u2019m excited to work with the search committee as they select the next leader for CLP.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She came to Oregon after obtaining her JD from Cleveland Marshall College of Law, quickly working with Lewis and Clark Law School to create their Street Law program, which she still teaches as an adjunct professor. Marilyn came to the attention of CLP co-founders Bob and Marilyn Ridgley, who were drawn to her passion for their work in civic education, a passion which they shared. \u00a0She was clearly the natural fit as the first Executive Director of Civics Learning Project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cOur journey with Marilyn over the last 40 years has been one of the most gratifying pieces of our lives,\u201d said Bob Ridgley. \u00a0\u201cIt has been thrilling to watch her grow CLP from its earliest conception to what it is today: a powerful instrument for civic engagement in Oregon and a model of what passion for education and a deep respect for democracy can accomplish.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CLP is prepared for this transition notes Koehler. \u00a0\u201cThe good news is that Marilyn will leave CLP in a strong position \u2013 both fiscally and programmatically \u2013 and will be available to help through the transition to a new Executive Director. The Board is pleased with the existing CLP staff, which will help provide continuity through this leadership change.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Board has formed a search committee, which has retained Paula Manley as its search consultant.
